Ny i cellofan..
Listening to Wardell gray playing tunes like "Bebop" and "Grooving High" is an interesting experience.
Imagine that the great Lester Young, would have decided to play this material, and you have an approximation of the sound (although Wardell is more than copying him, even on non bebop tunes).
Wardell plays of the melodic content, and takes on a much more "horizontal" approach to beboop than anyone else I ever heard.
The sort of "Angular" bebop-heads combined with this approach makes for an interesting tension, that is quite unique.
I have heard later recordings of Wardell, where his style seems to have gravitated towards that of Charlie Parker.
Althoug these records are good, I think that this record is more personal and as I said unique.
